Memphis, TN: A car crashed into a North Memphis house and burst into flames Saturday morning.8th November 2014
A car crashed into a North Memphis house and burst into flames Saturday morning.
The driver? An 11-year-old boy.
The mood was tense on Vollintine Street Saturday. Helen May says she and her daughter ran for their lives after a car crashed into their home and burst into flames.
"I'm happy that me and my daughter got out alive. Yeah ,that's the main thing, we got out alive," said May.
"And there was a loud crash I mean a huge boom," said May's daughter, Rosilyn Smith. "And low and behold, there sits a car on our front porch, and its smoking."
Homeowners say the shock came when they found out an underage driver was behind the wheel.
Smith said, "And when they got back, low and behold it's my best friend's grandson, only 11 years old."
According to police, the boy hit the accelerator instead of the break, jumped a curb and crashed into the house.
The child's uncle arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. He didn't want to talk on camera, but says he was sleeping when the child took the car without permission.
Meanwhile, residents at the house where the car crashed say they have no hard feelings. They're just happy to be alive.
The crash remains under investigation. Paramedics say the young driver was injured in the crash and taken to the hospital.
The 11 year old was cited with no driver's license, financial responsibility, failure to maintain proper control, and striking a fixed object.
