Miami Gardens, FL : Teen on joyride crashes mom's car into home on Tuesday afternoon, May 5, 2015
A car driven by a 14-year-old crashed into a home, injuring a woman inside the house, Tuesday afternoon, Miami Gardens Police said.
The vehicle struck a house at 2038 N.W. 38th Ave., in Miami Gardens sometime around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. A witness said the black Nissan Maxima sped around the corner, flew in the air, drove through the fence and landed partially inside the Miami Gardens house after crashing into the home's window.
Neighbors said the car was tearing down Northwest 39th Avenue near 209th Street, and the pavement was still wet from rain. "I was walking down the street, and I saw the car coming, and he was going so fast," said witness Pat Ivy. "I was like, 'Why is he gonna go so fast around this curb?'"
"So instead of going around the curb, since the road is already wet, the car kept going, and it jumped the sidewalk," Ivy continued. "If you look over there, there's tire tracks. He missed all the trees, and by the time he got here, he went airborne and flew into the house."
A neighbor, 19-year-old Brandon Hestor, also witnessed the crash, and he helped get the driver out of the car. "Then I looked, and I saw the car fly up into the house. That's pretty much it, and then I ran outside, pulled my phone out and called 911, told them the address and ran over there to help him out of the car," he said.
A cellphone video captured the neighbors as they pulled the teen out of the car. The footage shows he was able to stand after the accident. "When they pulled him out, his face was all bloody," said Ivy. "He was saying he can't breathe."
According to the teen's relatives, he is 14 years old, and the Nissan belongs to his mother.
Inside the small home, neighbors said the owner's daughter was watching TV. Police said the woman inside the house was hit with debris. She and the teen driver were both transported to an area hospital in stable condition. That woman is now out of the hospital and recovering from minor head injuries.
A relative of the homeowner said the accident could have had a more tragic outcome. "Definitely, definitely. They could have lost their lives, yes," said Cyril Gibson.
Relatives of the teen driver came to the scene and said he should have known better. The car was left a mangled mess and the house was deemed unsafe.
The family who lived there now must find a new place to call home, because their house has been deemed "unsafe."
The teen driver remains in the hospital with some minor head injuries. He is expected to be OK.
