Marietta, GA : 22-year-old mother killed in wreck on Delk Road on Friday, July 1, 2016
Cobb police say a 22-year-old mother is dead after she lost control of the SUV she was driving Friday just after noon, while her toddler and an adult passenger both suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
According to witnesses and evidence from the crash scene, the woman, who police identified as Ashleigh L. Smith of Marietta, was headed east on Delk Road near the Cobb Parkway overpass in a gray 1998 Ford Explorer when she abruptly steered left. Investigators believe she then overcorrected, causing the SUV to spin counterclockwise.
“As the Ford exited the eastbound lanes of travel and into the center grass median, it tripped on the curb and began to barrel roll through the median,” Cobb Police spokesman Dana Pierce said in a news release. “The vehicle came to a final stop on its roof in the first of two westbound lanes of Delk Road.”
Pierce said Smith was ejected from the SUV as it was overturning through the median. She was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Her front seat passenger, identified as Scottie E. Rosser of Marietta, 25, was also transported by ambulance to Kennestone Hospital.
Smith’s 1-year-old child was in the back seat and was taken by ambulance to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite for treatment.
It is not known if the adults were wearing seatbelts or if the child was in a carseat.
Police are continuing the investigation into the crash.
