Waterloo, NE : 87-year-old man killed in collision between pickup and lawn mower in western Douglas County on Thursday evening, May 19, 2016
An elderly man who was mowing his lawn died when hit by a pickup near 261st and Pacific Streets on Thursday evening.
Donald Fitzwater, 87, was declared dead at the scene of the crash, which was reported at about 6 p.m.
Deputies at the scene said that Brenda L. Nelson, 54, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado north on 261st Street and hit Fitzwater, who was on a lawn mower. Alcohol might have be involved, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.
The area was wide open with good visibility and little traffic, deputies said.
T.J. Korpela, assistant fire chief for the Waterloo Volunteer Fire Department, said he pronounced Fitzwater dead at the scene. Nelson was uninjured, Korpela said. She made the 911 call, deputies said. There weren’t any other witnesses.
Nelson remained in custody Thursday night. Any charges will await her blood alcohol test results and a review by the county attorney, the Sheriff’s Office said.
