Charlotte,NC : ID woman killed in I-85 crash on may, wednesday 10th 2017

A woman has been identified after she was killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a car along Interstate 85 in Gaston County Wednesday night.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 41-year-old Waleska Rodrigues Rivera, of Shelby, was killed in the wreck which occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. on I-85 northbound at Edgewood Road.

Troopers said Rivera's 11-year-old daughter was seriously injured in the wreck. Highway Patrol initially said Wednesday night that Rivera's daughter was 10-years-old.

Troopers said the daughter was in the back seat of the car when the wreck occurred.

According to troopers, Rivera and her daughter were traveling north on I-85 in a Toyota. Highway Patrol said the tractor-trailer stopped due to construction work and the road being repaved in the area. Witnesses told troopers that the Toyota failed to brake before striking the back of the tractor-trailer.

Troopers said Rivera failed to reduce speed and did not slow down before the wreck.

Rivera and her daughter were both wearing seat belts at the time of the wreck, according to Highway Patrol. Troopers added that the daughter was in some kind of child restraint in the back seat, but would not confirm if that contributed to saving her life.

The road reopened just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night after being closed for nearly two hours.

Highway Patrol said the young girl was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center. The daughter is in critical but stable condition, Highway Patrol said.
