San Bernardino, California
Authorities on Friday released the identity of the woman who died in a head-on collision on Highway 395 near Kramer Junction early Thursday morning.
Lavonda Reed, 47, of Moreno Valley, lost her life in the crash just over three miles south of Kramer Junction that resulted in two others being airlifted to local trauma centers with major injuries, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department.
Authorities said Reed was driving a 2014 Kia just before 5:30 a.m. and attempted to pass a tractor trailer while traveling southbound on Highway 395. But Reed collided with an oncoming 2016 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck as she moved into the northbound lane.
Authorities said both vehicles turned onto the asphalt shoulder and collided head on. Reed’s Kia remained on its wheels, coming to a rest between the northbound and southbound Highway 395 lanes. The Chevrolet traveled into the open desert, authorities said.
Responders pronounced Reed dead at the scene. Three other persons were injured.
A 40-year-old-man and an 18-year-old woman suffered major injuries, while a 43-year-old man suffered minor injuries and was transported to Victor Valley Global Medical Center by Desert Ambulance. The man with major injuries, who was driving the Chevrolet, was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center by a California Highway Patrol helicopter. Mercy Air transported the young woman to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
Authorities continued to investigate Friday and said drugs or alcohol to not appear to be factors in the collision.
