BATTLE CREEK, MI : A semi-truck driver was distracted prior to a multi-vehicle crash on Saturday, September 23rd 2017
Michigan State Police say a semi-truck driver was distracted prior to a multi-vehicle crash that shut down I-94 for several hours.
The crash happened at 12:18 p.m. Saturday on I-94 near the Renton Road overpass.
Police say the semi-truck driver, 63-year-old Charles Rothney, told troopers that he took his eyes off the road to put his eye glasses down and did not see that traffic was backed up on westbound I-94. Rothney’s semi rear-ended a Hyundai Sonata, forcing the Sonata into the median. The semi continued across the median, through the cable barrier and into the eastbound lanes and crashed into a Jaguar. The semi then struck the guardrail on the south side of the freeway.
Troopers say the semi and Jaguar burst into flames.
Rothney was taken to Bronson Battle Creek where he was evaluated and released. The occupants of the Jaguar and Hyundai suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Eastbound I-94 shut down for several hours while crews cleaned up the scene.
