AMSTERDAM, NY : 3 theft suspects captured after Amsterdam crash on Friday, 4th November 2016
Three suspects sought for stealing from cars were captured Friday afternoon after running away from a crash in a car they had stolen, Amsterdam police said.
City police said they were on the lookout for a car whose occupants stole purses from parked unoccupied vehicles at a town of Amsterdam business by smashing the car windows. Police spotted the car, which fled, sideswiped a car at Market and Division streets, lost control and crashed into the pole.
After the three were caught, police determined the car was stolen in Florida and its license plate had been stolen in Amsterdam. The same car and suspects, all from Fort Lauderdale, were involved in similar thefts in western New York, police said.
Driver Demetris J. Jewel, 19, was hospitalized for minor crash injuries. He's charged with criminal possession of stolen property counts, resisting arrest, unlawfully fleeing a police officer and reckless driving. Passenger Cleveland D. Johnson, 18, is fugitive from justice from Florida and has eight outstanding felony warrants, police said. He and the other passenger, 17, are charged with stolen property possession and resisting arrest.
They also face charges in the town of Amsterdam for the thefts. All three were held pending arraignment. State Police assisted.
