Sacramento,CA : Pursuit ends after stolen car catches fire; driver arrested on June, Wednesday 28th 2017
A driver in a stolen car led authorities on a 26-mile chase around inland North County and stopped only after the vehicle caught fire in Escondido Wednesday, sheriff’s officials said.
Deputies located the stolen 2006 Audi A3 on Lake Wohlford Road in Valley Center about 4 p.m. They tried to pull over the driver, but he took off, leading the deputies through the communities of Rincon, Pauma Valley and Pala.Several times during the pursuit — which reached speeds of up to 90 mph — spike strips were used to deflate the Audi’s tires, officials said.
Despite the flat tires, the driver made his way onto southbound Interstate 15, briefly onto Old Highway 395, then back onto south I-15. The California Highway Patrol took over the pursuit at Old Highway 395.
Near Valley Parkway in Escondido, the Audi caught fire, forcing the driver to pull over on the freeway about 4:40 p.m., officials said. The suspect, a 43-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a stolen vehicle and other charges related to the chase.
There were no injuries or collisions during the pursuit, officials said.
