Hillsboro, N.D : Driver injured in Traill County crash on Monday night, February 20, 2017

A Canadian man driving on Interstate 29 suffered serious injuries when he attempted to pass another vehicle and rolled into a ditch Monday night.

Oman Gora, 47, of Calgary, Alta., was northbound in a Nissan Xterra, 2 miles north of Hillsboro when he tried to pass a pickup and spun out of control, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The crash happened about 10:40 p.m. Monday on what troopers described as an icy roadway. He spun into the east ditch where he rolled and came to a stop on the roof of the car. Gora was wearing his seatbelt, the Highway Patrol said, and managed to unbuckle himself but was unable to exit the vehicle.

He was removed from the vehicle by the Hillsboro Fire Department and was transported by ambulance to Hillsboro before being taken by helicopter to Sanford Health in Fargo.

Gora's injuries were described as serious, but not life-threatening by the Highway Patrol.

While investigating the crash, troopers had a scary moment when a passing semi lost control while passing through the scene. The semi jackknifed, the Highway Patrol said, and entered the east ditch, just missing first responders. The driver sustained minor injuries.
