COLUMBIA, SC : Bicyclist killed in Sumter after being struck by minivan on Sunday, 17th March 2024

First responders were notified around 6:15 a.m. Saturday after a man on a bicycle was struck by a minivan.

50-year-old Carlos Sumpter died in the crash. He was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker.

The collision happened on Broad Street near Carter Road, according to the Sumter Police Department (SPD). Police say the driver immediately stopped, checked on the man, and notified first responders.

Sumter PD officers are continuing to investigate with assistance from the S.C. Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
