Lake City, FL : Robert Edward Smith, 42, man dies in single-car crash in western Columbia County on Thursday, January 1, 2015

A Lake City man was killed early Thursday morning when he failed to stop at an intersection and ran into a large oak tree in Columbia County, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Dead is Robert Edward Smith, 42. The accident occurred at 2:43 a.m. at County Road 252 and CR 252A, an FHP news release states.

Smith was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado south on CR 252A when he failed to stop at a stop sign. He continued across CR 252 and hit a tree, FHP reported. Smith died at the scene.

No other cars were involved in the accident, and Smith was alone in his pickup truck.
