Michigan City, IN : Truck driver cited in 5-vehicle crash on U.S. 20 in LaPorte County on Tuesday morning, March 8, 2016
A semi-truck following too closely is blamed for Tuesday's five-vehicle accident that injured seven people along a heavily-traveled stretch of U.S 20 in LaPorte County.
Among the injured was 6-year old Kallie Pierre, who was flown to a hospital in South Bend where her mother, Rodeline Guadron, 31, of Michigan City was also taken by ambulance.
It is believed that none of the people hurt suffered life-threatening injuries, according to LaPorte County Police Capt. Mike Kellems.
Christopher Huber, 29, of DeMotte was hauling a steel coil when his semi hit the back end of a car driven by 44-year-old Andrea Otterson of Michigan City that was stopped to make a turn, police said.
Otterson's car was then pushed into the rear of a passenger vehicle driven by Jill Thomas, 47. The Thomas car was then pushed into the rear of a car operated by Guardron, whose car was shoved across the center line into an oncoming semi truck, police said.
Pierre and two 14-year-old boys were in separate vehicles stopped waiting to turn into the Renaissance Academy, a charter school for pre-school to eighth-grade students.
Huber, who was not injured, was cited for following too closely, police said.
The stretch of U.S. 20 between U.S. 35 and Indiana 39 has been the site of 39 traffic accidents dating back to Jan. 1, 2015, according to county police. Of those, 27 were non-injury and 12 were injury crashes. Included in those accidents were 13 crashes at the intersection of County Road 400 West and U.S. 20, where Tuesday's accident occurred, none of which were fatalities.
During that same period, police issued 477 citations and warnings for a variety of violations, including speeding, school bus stop arm violations and unsafe lane changes. Police conducted an "Operation Truck Stop" on U.S.20 for a week last July to enforce traffic laws.
“Due to the high volume of traffic in this particular stretch of U.S. 20 our deputies have always maintained a strong presence” Sheriff John Boyd said in a statement.
Boyd said that the portion of U.S. 20 near the Renaissance Academy has been reduced to a 45 mph speed limit and additional warning signs and lights have been put in place.
