Baton Rouge, LA : Motorcyclist killed in crash with pickup in Kentwood on Friday, August 5, 2016
A Franklinton man died Friday evening after crashing into a pickup truck and being thrown from his motorcycle in Kentwood, State Police said.
Robert Dykes, 42, was riding a 2010 Kawasaki motorcycle east on La. 1055 near the intersection with La. 1054 around 6:30 p.m. Friday, Trooper 1st Class Dustin Dwight said in a news release. Dykes, who was traveling "at a high rate of speed," collided with a 1990 Nissan pickup truck as the driver, Henry Butler Jr., turned left into a private driveway, Dwight said.
Dykes was thrown from the bike and suffered severe injuries, Dwight said. He was airlifted in critical condition to North Oaks hospital, where he died around 9 p.m.
Dykes was wearing a helmet, Dwight said, but it is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash. Blood samples were taken and will analyzed at the State Police Crime Lab.
Butler, 76, was properly restrained and was not injured in the crash. He submitted a voluntary breath sample that showed no signs of alcohol, Dwight said.
The investigation is ongoing.
