A Newport man faces multiple charges after he crashed into a patch of trees while driving drunk, according to authorities.

Police received several reports of a single-vehicle accident on Cheney Street near Winter Street on Wednesday shortly before 7:30 p.m.

Officers arrived to discover the car had driven off the road and struck several trees. The driver, 23-year-old Corbin Simoneau, was trapped inside with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

According to authorities, witnesses said Simoneau was driving very fast. Police also said alcohol may have contributed to the crash.

Simoneau was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless operation and possession of drugs in a car.
