French Lick, IN : Driver killed in single-vehicle crash near French Lick on Monday morning, July 21, 2014
A West Baden man died as a result of injuries sustained Monday morning during a rollover crash on State Road 56.
Around 7:20 a.m., Gared Blake Allen, 28, was traveling eastbound on State Road 56 in a red 2000 Sterling dump truck.
For an unknown reason, Allen drove off the south edge of the roadway on French Lick Hill and was unable to steer the truck back onto the road. This caused the vehicle to slide down a ditch line, overturn, and strike a tree, according to police.
Allen was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orange County Coroner’s Office. The truck was partially loaded with soil, which spilled into the ditch line.
Police said Allen was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Vehicle recovery crews remain on scene at this time, attempting to remove the truck. State Road 56 has been closed since the crash; it is anticipated that it will remain closed for at least another hour.
Indiana State Police were assisted on scene by the French Lick Police and Fire Departments, Orange County Coroner, Orange County Rural Fire Department, and IU Health EMS.
