A Fowler man died Sunday in a crash after trying to elude Adams County sheriff's deputies.
Adams County Sheriff Brian Vonderhaar reported that deputies were investigating a criminal case in the 7800 block of Ewbanks Road when they saw a suspect in the case and attempted to pull him over. The driver fled at a high rate of speed and later crashed.
Vonderhaar said deputies followed the vehicle, but not at a high rate of speed and without activating lights or sirens.
A report from the Illinois State Police said the driver, Robert D. Reinold, 47, was traveling west on Ellington Road about 1:45 p.m. Sunday at a high rate of speed when his 1998 Pontiac TransAm struck a concrete support for a railroad bridge spanning Ellington between North 60th and North 72nd streets.
Adams County Coroner James Keller pronounced Reinold dead at the scene.
Ellington Road was closed for some time at North 60th and North 72nd while the Illinois State Police reconstructed the crash.
Tri-Township Fire Department, Adams County Sheriff's Department, Adams County Ambulance, Adams County coroner's office, Adams County Highway Department and the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit all assisted at the scene.
