Cozad, NE : Two Iowa men died after two trucks collided on Interstate 80 near Cozad on Sunday, December 6, 2015
Two Iowa men were killed in an early morning collision on Interstate 80 near Cozad Sunday.
According to a Nebraska State Patrol spokesperson, at 2:34 a.m. an eastbound semi driven by Al-Jabbar Richard Hopkins, 34, of North Carolina, was rear-ended by a straight truck driven by Adrian Gilbert-Carrillo, 25, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The spokesperson said Hopkins attempted to exit at the Cozad rest stop but was unable to make the exit. Hopkins merged back onto the interstate at a slow rate of speed, at which time the straight truck collided with the semi-trailer at mile marker 227.
The passenger in the straight truck, Roberto Garcia-Gonzales, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Carrillo was airlifted to CHIGoodSamaritanHospital in Kearney, where he was pronounced dead, the spokesperson said.
Hopkins was uninjured and a passenger in the semi suffered minor injuries.
The spokesperson said it is unknown if restraints were in use. The patrol was assisted by the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Cozad Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, and a medical transport helicopter.
