Anderson, S.C : Cousins seriously injured after struck by a utility trailer in Anderson County on Thursday, June 9, 2016

Four people were injured in crash in Anderson County, including two girls who were airlifted with serious injuries after they were struck by a utility trailer.

The wreck happened at about 7:53 p.m. Thursday on Bluefield and Flat Rock roads, South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said.

Lane Cpl. Tony Keller said an SUV with a utility trailer in tow was legally parked on the shoulder of Bluefield Road.

(Note: Initially, the audible Highway Patrol message board was thought to have said "illegally parked," but Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne later clarified that the SUV and trailer were legally parked.)

Keller said a westbound car hit the trailer, which then struck two girls who were on the side of the road. The girls, Anna Nefziger, 15, and Emily Truman, 12, both from Starr, were airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Family members' Facebook posts said the girls, who are cousins, were helping mow a church member's lawn. The posts said the girls were in between the trailer and the SUV, putting clippings into the trailer when it was struck, pinning them against the vehicle. The posts said both girls suffered serious leg injuries as well as other injuries.

"You hear bad things happen to good people, and these are good people," said Justin Roach, a family friend. "It is bad, but it could have been worse. It's just sad that they were doing a good deed for someone in the community, and this tragic thing happened."

Roach said he's especially concerned about Truman's injuries, because she loves to play softball.

There's a prayer vigil planned for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Starr Athletic Association softball field.

"It's just one of those things where you wait and hope and pray for the best," Roach said.

The 34-year-old driver of the car and her 50-year-old passenger were also injured. They were taken to AnMed by ambulance. There is no word on their conditions.

Investigators have not made a decision on whether charges will be filed against the driver of the car.
