Bascom, OH : Tiffin woman dies in head-on crash on Ohio 18 between Bascom and Fostoria on Monday, July 11, 2016

A Tiffin woman was killed in a head-on crash Monday on Ohio 18 between Bascom and Fostoria.

Carol Engle, 76, the driver of one vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Fremont post of the State Highway Patrol reported.

The patrol said a 1996 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Keith Gottfried, 22, of Upper Sandusky, was westbound on Ohio 18, near Township 101, when the left front tire of the truck blew about 5:04 p.m. Monday. The truck went left of center and hit an eastbound 2009 Ford Fusion driven by Engle, the patrol said.

Gottfried suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene, the patrol said.

The crash remained under investigation early today. The patrol said alcohol was not believed to be a factor.
Both vehicles had severe damage and were towed.

Assisting at the accident scene were the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, Bascom Fire and Emergency Medical Service, the Seneca County coroner, Life Flight medical helicopter, Fox’s Towing and Peacock’s Towing.
