Memphis, TN : Crash knocks out power for many near Wolfchase Galleria on Sunday evening, November 16, 2014
A Sunday evening crash near Wolfchase Galleria knocked out power to nearly 1,000 people in the area. Power was still not restored by Monday morning, causing chaos for drivers heading to work or shop.
Jackie Kimble spent more than 16 hours in the cold at her Cordova apartment. Her family offered her a warm place to stay, but she decided to stick it out, hopeful the power would be restored quickly.
"I just bundled up in bed and that was the best thing to do," Kimble said.
The crash that caused the power outage happened around 7:30 p.m. Sunday in front of Wolfchase Galleria on Germantown Parkway. Police say a woman driving southbound drove into oncoming traffic, hit a "wrong way" sign, flipped, and hit a utility pole.
The power had not yet returned Monday morning as frustrated drivers were met by flashing blue lights and Memphis police officers directing traffic.
Northbound and southbound lanes on Germantown Parkway near the mall were closed. Waleed Abdalkhaliq was stuck in traffic on his way to be dropped off at work near the mall.
"Honestly, I thought it'd be much quicker to just walk to work," he said.
MLGW crews worked through the afternoon to restore power, updating their social media accounts with expected restoration times.
The woman involved in the accident was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police have not yet said whether she will face charges.
