STURGIS, SD : A two-vehicle accident near Sturgis on Tuesday, December, 19th 2017
A two-vehicle accident near Sturgis involving two Black Hills residents resulted in minor injuries Tuesday afternoon.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, at 4:04 p.m. Tuesday, a 2014 Ford Explorer, operated by a 65-year-old male, was traveling eastbound in the right lane near mile marker 30 on Interstate 90 when a 2006 MINI Cooper, operated by a 32-year-old male, also traveling eastbound, in the left lane, struck the rear end of the Ford Explorer, causing both drivers to lose control. Both vehicles struck the cable guardrail on the median side of the interstate. The Ford Explorer came to rest on its top, and the MINI Cooper on its passenger side, both in the left lane of the roadway.
The driver of the MINI Cooper received minor injuries and was taken to the Sturgis Regional Hospital via ambulance.
Both drivers were reported to be wearing seatbelts, and no charges are pending.
The report did not cite road conditions at the time of the accident.
Tony Mangan, with the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, did not release the names or places of residence of the victims, citing Marsy’s Law, which originated as a constitutional amendment approved by voters in November 2016 that includes a provision that gives victims “the right to prevent disclosure of information or records that could be used to locate or harass the victim or the victim’s family.”
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. Other agencies on scene included Sturgis EMS, Meade County Sheriff’s Office, Sturgis Police Department, Meade County Fire Department, and the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
