Belleville, IL : 37-year-old woman dead after crash on Mascoutah Avenue Friday morning, March 10, 2017
A 37-year-old Belleville woman died Friday morning after a crash involving two vehicles on Mascoutah Avenue just east of Belleville, according to Belleville Police Detective Sgt. Todd Keilbach.
Amelita Basan Milburn, of the 700 block of Logan Street, died after her car collided with a pickup driven by a man, who was taken into police custody. The two drivers were the only occupants of the vehicles. Both were transported to local hospitals.
Milburn died as a result of her injuries at the hospital. She was pronounced dead at 7:32 a.m., according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye, Sr. The other driver was treated for his injuries and then taken into police custody.
Both lanes of the road, also known as Illinois 158, were closed as Belleville Police investigated the crash. The road reopened later in the afternoon.
The vehicles crashed into one another shortly after 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Mascoutah Avenue and Fox Valley Drive. The truck ended up in a ditch, and the male driver was able to get out, though the front of the truck was damaged, said Belleville Fire Chief Tom Pour.
The car driven by the woman ended up near a storage facility on the south side of Mascoutah Avenue, Pour said. Belleville Fire personnel had to cut the top off the car to extricate the woman from the badly damaged vehicle. The fire department had called for a helicopter, though the woman was ultimately transported to the hospital by an ambulance, Pour said. The woman was breathing but was not conscious when she left, according to Pour.
The crash obstructed the entrance to where Belleville high school and elementary school buses park, causing lengthy delays for some routes. Belleville School District 201 Superintendent Jeff Dosier said some routes could run up to 45 minutes late, though he said most were only running about 15 minutes late.
Only school buses heading east were allowed to pass through. The road closure began at Misty Hollow Drive on the east side and Belle Valley Drive on the west.
