JEFFERSON, OH : A Rock Creek man accused of causing a three-vehicle crash on Saturday, November, 18th 2017
A Rock Creek man accused of causing a three-vehicle crash that killed one teen and seriously injured another is facing vehicular homicide and assault charges.
The county grand jury has indicted Anthony E. Tarbell, 33, of 2839 Liberty St., Rock Creek, on one third-degree felony count of aggravated vehicular homicide, one fourth-degree felony count of vehicular assault and one minor misdemeanor violation for disobeying a traffic device.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Tarbell was traveling south on Chapel Road in Austinburg Township when he ran a stop sign at the Clay Street intersection just after 11 a.m. June 30, striking the eastbound car driven by Joshua R. Evans, 16, of Leroy Township in Lake County, and knocking it into a utility pole.
Tarbell’s truck then hit another truck in the oncoming lane, driven by a then-83-year-old Leo Marchand, of Ashtabula.
Evans, who was wearing a seatbelt during the collision, was transported to University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center and later flown to a Cleveland hospital, where he died.
Louis Diamond of Painesville, Evans’ teen passenger, was also
taken to the Geneva hospital, then flown to Cleveland and later released. Tarbell’s assault charge relates to Diamond’s injuries, according to the indictment.
Tarbell and Marchand also sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to hospitals.
Tarbell submitted to a blood test following the crash, according to OHP. County Prosecutor Nicholas Iarocci said Thursday the test
indicated Tarbell was not impaired or under the influence at the time.
If convicted on the vehicular homicide charge, Tarbell faces up to five years in prison and a following three years of probation. According to county court records he has been released on a $10,000 bond.
