Barstow, CA : Child airlifted, 3 others injured after crash on I-15 Tuesday, December 27, 2016
Authorities said a small child and three other people were injured in an accident on Interstate 15 Tuesday evening.
The crash was reported at 5:45 p.m. on the southbound lanes of I-15 between Fort Irwin Road and Old Highway 58. California Highway Patrol officials said in a Wednesday news release four vehicles were ultimately involved.
The crash occurred when a woman in a Dodge Durango headed south on I-15 approached stopped traffic north of Old Highway 58. For unknown reasons, the woman failed to stop and collided with the back of a Nissan Pathfinder, causing it to be pushed forward and collide with a Honda Civic. The impact then caused the Civic to collide with a Chevrolet Malibu, authorities said.
As a result of the crash, three people, including a small child, were airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment while another person was taken to Barstow Community Hospital. Specifics on their injuries weren't given, but CHP traffic logs reported that a man in the Nissan Pathfinder said his wife and son were injured.
The crash blocked the No. 1 and No. 2 southbound I-15 lanes and caused traffic to stall as authorities responded to the scene. All lanes were open by 7:44 p.m., according to CHP logs, but traffic was still backed up to Yermo as of 8 p.m. Tuesday.
CHP officials said the crash remains under investigation. Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
