Willits, CA : Arizona woman killed in a crash north of Willits on Sunday, March 5, 2017

A Phoenix woman died Sunday when her car plunged down an embankment off of Highway 101 north of Willits, according to the CHP.

The 83-year-old woman’s name was not available Monday morning.

According to the CHP, the woman was slowly driving north on the highway about four miles from Willits at 7:15 p.m. when her vehicle, a 2003 Toyota Camry, veered across the highway and down an embankment, where it collided with a culvert. The impact launched the vehicle into the air and the woman was ejected from the car, which then struck her as it continued to tumble down the embankment, the CHP said.

Several people who witnessed the collision attempted to revive the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene when emergency personnel arrived.

The woman did not appear to have been wearing a seatbelt, the CHP said. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, the CHP said.
