Olympia, WA : Celtics star Isaiah Thomas’ 22-year-old sister dies in car crash in Washington on April, saturday 15th 2017
Isaiah Thomas and his family were rocked by the news that his younger sister died in a car crash early yesterday morning.
Chyna J. Thomas, 22, died at the scene of a one-car crash on the side of Interstate 5, after her car crashed into a Jersey barrier and light post at 5 a.m. Pacific time.
The point guard, who had been preparing to take the floor at the Garden with the Celtics tonight for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series against the Chicago Bulls, did not find out about his sister’s death until after going through a full practice at the team’s Waltham facility.
As of early evening, Thomas was still at his home in Boston.
Reached at his home in Tacoma, Wash., last night, Thomas’ father, James, said Isaiah still hadn’t made a decision about when to fly home.
“It’s a crucial time for our family right now,” James Thomas said.
Celtics coach Brad Stevens was one of the first visitors to his player’s home. According to a league source, Thomas was “in a state of shock.”
A team source, expressing remorse and that “it’s not just relevant” if Thomas plays or not, said he wouldn’t be surprised if the process goes on.
“We have not even gone there with Isaiah — we just have to leave him to his thoughts,” the team source said. “We probably won’t know anything until game time (tonight).”
The Celtics released a statement that read: “We are terribly saddened by the tragic loss of Chyna Thomas. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Celtics organization are with Isaiah and his family.”
Chyna Thomas’ death comes at a time when her older brother was gliding into the playoffs, and all of the heightened emotions that involves, after putting together one of the great scoring seasons in Celtics history.
According to a Washington State Patrol spokesman, Chyna Thomas was driving her 1998 Toyota Camry south on Interstate 5 when witnesses saw her car start to “drift.”
“All of a sudden it started to drift very casually onto the left shoulder,” Trooper Nick King told the Tacoma News Tribune.
The car traveled about 50 feet and partially off the roadway until it hit the Jersey barrier, then vaulted into the sign post. King said the car came to rest on top of the barrier and against the post. According to the state patrol, she was not wearing seat belt.
