WASHINGTON COUNTY, IL : Mt. Vernon man killed in traffic crash on Friday, December 3rd, 2016

A 45-year-old Mt. Vernon man died in a two-vehicle crash Friday night on Interstate 64 in Washington County.

Jon Lair was pronounced dead at the scene by the Washington County Coroner's Office. The crash was reported at 11:57 p.m. near Mile Post 51.5.

Lair was traveling east on I-64 when his pickup truck exited the roadway to the left and crashed into a guard rail. The vehicle then came back onto the interstate and crossed over both eastbound lanes of traffic and sideswiped a concrete bridge.

The truck came to rest in the center of the eastbound lanes where it was struck by a semi driven by Santiago A. Reyes, 62, of Yelm, Wash. The semi was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision, states an Illinois State Police District 13 news release. There are no charges pending at this time.

The roadway was closed for nearly six hours for the crash investigation and scene clean up. The accident remains under investigation by the ISP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
