The crash happened just after 6 a.m. near the intersection of Sledge and Winget roads.
The driver, identified as 21-year-old Arkon Gray Stewart III, died at the scene, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
Police said their initial investigation reveals that Stewart was driving his 2009 Toyota Scion on Sledge Road just past Winget Road when he lost control around the curve and crashed into a tree. Police said the car was found to be wrapped around the tree.
