Denver, CO : A Palmer High School student was killed in a three-vehicle predawn crash on Sunday, August 13, 2017

A Palmer High School student was killed in a three-vehicle, predawn crash Sunday on Interstate 25 just north of Briargate Parkway that injured five people, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Jose Huerta, 16, was driving north when his Ford Focus veered off the left side of the interstate, striking a cable guardrail along the shoulder. The impact caused the Focus to spin around, coming to rest in the inside northbound lane, but facing south, the State Patrol said.

A Honda CR-Z crashed into the Focus, pushing it into the center lane where it was struck again by an Infiniti M35.

The crash, which happened about 5:15 a.m., shut down I-25 for nearly four hours.

Huerta, who died at a hospital, was not wearing a seat belt, the State Patrol said.

Ashley Epler, a classmate of Huerta's at Palmer, said he was an aspiring artist who had drawn pictures for her, and was a math and Spanish tutor.

A Facebook page that appears to be Huerta's says he attends the downtown Colorado Springs school and has pictures of his artwork.

The driver of the Honda, Colin Glenn, 27, and his passenger, Grace Sung, 24, were seriously injured and taken to a hospital. Andrew Griffiths, 41, the Infiniti driver, wasn't injured.

Three passengers in his car, 38-year-old Brandi Griffiths and a 5-year-old boy and 9-year-old-girl, suffered minor injuries.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
