A man crashed into an abandoned car along Interstate 84 Monday morning, sending his car into a roll in the westbound lanes near 122nd Avenue.
The 29-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries after he was thrown from his car, Portland Police said. He was listed in critical condition as of 9:30 a.m. Monday.
Crash investigators said they believe the man was heading west on I-84 around 6:40 a.m. when he swerved into the left emergency lane to avoid stopped traffic.
A witness told KATU News that she saw the man driving in the emergency lane to pass other cars just before the crash.
The man's vehicle struck an abandoned car that was parked in the emergency lane, sending the car into a roll.
A third car was damaged in the crash, but no other injuries were reported to police.
The Oregon Dept. of Transportation closed down I-84 at 148th Avenue. All westbound traffic was being rerouted off the interstate at 181st Avenue.
One lane was reopened at around 9:40 a.m and officials expected to have the interstate clear by 10 a.m. Monday.
