Lakeland, FL : 1 dead as 3 separate crashes snarl traffic in Polk on Tuesday, 4th October 2016
A 29-year-old Tampa man died in a crossover accident on State Road 60 east of Bartow — one of three separate accidents in Polk early Tuesday morning.
Jhoan M. Idarraga Munoz's 2009 Nissan Altima crossed the median before colliding with a tractor-trailer in the eastbound lanes of SR 60 west of 80 Foot Road, according to a FHP crash report.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Darryl Wayne Taylor, 55, of Lithia, suffered minor injuries, the FHP said.
The report said that Munoz's car was going west at a high rate of speed about 5:50 a.m. when he lost control and it crossed the median, then rotated and collided with the eastbound tractor-trailer. BotElsewhere Tuesday morning, two other crashes snarled traffic in Polk, causing delays during the morning commute.
Multiple vehicles collided at U.S. 98 South and Smith Lane near Bartow, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to the scene about 6:30 a.m. and remained for more than two hours. There were injuries that were not considered life-threatening, the PCSO said.
The Sheriff's Office also responded to a crash at Masterpiece and Mammoth Grove roads in Lake Wales. Three cars collided about 7:50 a.m., the PCSO said. Traffic returned to normal about 11 a.m.
