Norwalk, OH : Man killed in two-vehicle wreck in Ottawa County’s Carroll Township on Saturday, July 9, 2016

The Sandusky post of the state Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred at 3:18 p.m. Saturday on Ohio 19 at Duff Washa Road in Ottawa County’s Carroll Township.

John J. Word, 64, of Fremont, Ind., was driving a 2015 Ford Transit van west on Duff Washa Road when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign and entered the intersection of Ohio 19, where his vehicle collided with a northbound 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD pickup being driven by Jerry D. Ickes, 58, of Thornville, troopers said.

After the collision, both vehicles traveled off the west side of the roadway, coming to a stop in a ditch. The Silverado was pulling a trailer with a 1980 Sportcraft 24-foot fishing boat, which became disconnected and came to a stop off the eastside of the roadway.

Word, who was not earring a seat belt, sustained incapacitating injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Ickes sustained incapacitating injuries and was flown to Mercy St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Toledo. He was wearing his seatbelt.

His passenger, Jason L. Saum, 43, of Findlay, sustained incapacitating injuries and also was flown to St. Vincent’s. He, too, was wearing his seatbelt.

Word’s silver van sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene by Madison’s Towing.

The black Silverado sustained disabling damage. The vehicle and the boat were towed from the scene by Madison’s Towing.

Assisting Agencies: Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Carroll Township Police Department, Carrol Township Fire/EMS, Portage Fire District, and Madison’s Towing.

The crash is still under investigation. Alcohol/drug use does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
