Wiscasset, ME : Wiscasset police officer injured in cruiser crash on Route 1 early Thursday morning, April 14, 2016

A Wiscasset police officer was treated at an area hospital early Thursday morning after his cruiser was struck by another vehicle driven by a California man.

Sgt. Alfred Simmons, 64, was traveling south on Route 1 just before 12:30 a.m. when his cruiser, a 2013 Dodge Charger, was struck by a 2016 Acura sport utility vehicle driven by Yeshi Khendrup, 42, of El Cerrito, California, according to a news release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Khendrup was attempting to leave the Irving Circle K convenience store lot onto Route 1 when he pulled into the path of the cruiser and was struck on the driver’s side, according to the release.

Khendrup reported no injuries, but Simmons was taken to the Miles Campus of Lincoln Health in Damariscotta with complaints of pain in the chest and stomach. He was released later, and police said his injuries do not seem to be serious.

Lincoln County deputies and Wiscasset fire and ambulance responded to the crash.

Following interviews of both drivers and a review of video provided by the store, deputies issued Khendrup a traffic ticket for failing to yield the right of way.

Both vehicles had substantial damage and were towed from the scene.

Traffic was slowed for about an hour near the crash while deputies investigated and cleared the road.
