Parshallville, MI : 1 dead, 2 injured in a fatal three-vehicle crash in Hartland Township on Friday, July 29, 2016

Neighbors described a fatal three-vehicle crash in Hartland Township as an “explosion” and that one victim, who died at the scene, was trapped in his burning pickup.

Michigan State Police identified the dead man as a 41-year-old Davison man. Family has been notified, but police are not releasing his name because the body is too badly burned and they are waiting for dental records to confirm his identity.

Jacqueline Callaghan, who lives in the area of Clyde Road where the 5:45 a.m. Friday crash occurred, said she heard an “explosion,” which woke her up.

“I heard the impact,” she said. “It was metal. You knew it was cars hitting each other. I believe there was an explosion right away.

“(The pickup) was in flames when I looked out the door,” Callaghan said.

Other neighbors said the explosion shook their homes.

Neighbors rushed to help the victims, including a 25-year-old Flint man, who had minor injuries, and a 28-year-old Howell-area man, who was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he was last listed in critical condition.

Michigan State Police said preliminary details indicated that the Flint man was driving a Chevrolet Impala west on Clyde Road followed by the 41-year-old Davison man in a Chevrolet pickup truck while the 28-year-old Howell-area man was driving a Ford Explorer east when the crash occurred.

State police said how the crash occurred is still under investigation.

It is believed one driver veered into oncoming traffic.

Police said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

The crash closed Clyde Road between Cullen and Parshallville roads for more than four hours.
