Terre Haute,IN : One dead in fiery crash in Vermillion County on August, Monday 21st 2017
One person has died when a car went off eastbound U.S. 36 into a bridge column at Indiana 63 in Vermillion County about 7:45 a.m. today.
Sheriff Mike Phelps said it is likely the identity of the driver will be determined by dental records due to a fire that consumed the 2004 BMV after the collision. The car is registered in Pennsylvania, Phelps said.
Evidence at the scene shows the eastbound car went off the south side of the highway and hit a column supporting the bridge of northbound Indiana 63, the sheriff said.
Two passersby tried to get the driver out of the car, but he was unresponsive and they were unsuccessful, Phelps said.
"We don't know if speed was a factor," he said. "We have requested reconstructionists to help with the investigation. We don't know if the driver had a medical condition or what caused the car to go off the road."
One lane of eastbound U.S. 36 remains open for travel, he said.
