Hershey, NE : Three Dead in Fiery Crash on Interstate 80 on Sunday, August 21, 2016
Nebraska State Patrol investigators are working to determine what caused an I-80 crash that killed three people near Hershey Sunday.
The deadly crash shut down I-80 westbound between Maxwell and North Platte Sunday night. Traffic was detoured from I-80 at mile marker 179 to Highway 30 and then west to Sutherland.
WOWT 6 News sister station 10/11 News said witnesses tell them a semi-truck may have crossed the median and collided head-on with another semi-truck. NSP officials have not yet confirmed what caused the accident.
Lora Kreiling said her husband ran to help victims of the crash from their nearby house. He was able to pull one man from a semi-truck. Lora said her husband was later taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.
Daniel Uhl and Staci Dencausse said, after they narrowly escaped the crash, they also rushed to help.
"We ran towards the fire to try to see if their was any survivors, and I gave the guy my shirt. He put it around his face and pulled the man out of the car carrier. We tried to revive him, we pulled his burning clothes off his body," said Daniel Uhl.
