Charlotte, North Carolina
One person has died after a car hit a tree and burst into flames in northwest Charlotte, according to officials. The crash happened around 6:33 a.m. Sunday.
Police have identified the driver as Rudy Charles Zekou, 43, of Charlotte.
Investigators said Zekou was traveling northeast on Peachtree Road around a curve when the 1995 Nissan Maxima he was driving went off the road and struck the tree.
Neighbors said their houses shook and they heard a loud boom.
An officer arrived shortly after and tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, but the car was damaged and the officer couldn't open the door to save the driver.
A neighbor told Eyewitness News he also brought his fire extinguisher out but it wasn't enough to stop the fire.
"[The officer] brought his extinguisher out of his cruiser and I got mine out my house," the man said. "It was just too small."
MEDIC pronounced Zekou dead on the scene.
Investigators with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit said they are working to determine a cause.
It's unknown if alcohol contributed to the crash, however speed was a factor, according to police.
