Toledo, OH : 3 more die in crash in Lucas County on Sunday, March 26th 2017
Another triple fatal crash early Sunday morning became the second such accident taking the lives of three area residents within a week in eastern Lucas County’s rural Jerusalem Township.
Although Jerusalem Township Interim Fire Chief Tony Parseletti knows that’s unusual — six people dead from separate wrecks so close in time and distance — those two crashes weigh heavily on his mind.
“Am I supposed to worry next Saturday night?” he said.
Robin Shellhammer, 60, his wife Barb Shellhammer, 56, both of Oregon, and their daughter, Whitney Meinke, 33, of Curtice, Ohio, were killed early Sunday morning when a van missed a stop sign on Cousino Road and collided with the vehicle driven by Mr. Shellhammer on Seaman Road.
Chief Parseletti said the township roads, many of which have 50 mph speed limits, can be tough to navigate for drivers not familiar with the area. The van’s driver, Alejandro Jaramillo, 26, is from Asheville, N.C. He, along with Javier Cervera, 38, of Greensboro, N.C., and Pedro Martinez, unknown age and residence, were taken to Mercy Health St. Charles Hospital with minor injuries.
“You have to drive defensively and watch out,” Chief Parseletti said. “Even in the quiet country.”
A Millbury man and two Curtice brothers died on March 19 in a crash at Teachout Road and State Rt. 2. A pickup driven south on Teachout by Jamey Metroff, 29, traveled off the south side of the intersection with State Rt. 2.
The pickup struck a tree and overturned, killing Mr. Metroff and his passengers, Daniel Teet, 30, and Joshua Teet, 27, both of Curtice.
A bake sale was held Sunday to help defray the costs of funeral services for the victims of last week’s crash.
Mrs. Shellhammer, in this week’s crash, directed Nourish Early Learning, a daycare on Navarre Avenue, Oregon. It will be closed today.
Mrs. Meinke was a third grade teacher at R.C. Waters Elementary School in Oak Harbor. She leaves behind her husband and two children.
“Personally, I will cherish my memories and interactions with Whitney,” Guy Parmigian, Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools superintendent said in a Facebook post.
“She always had a smile on her face, was so positive, and was such a talented and engaging teacher who was loved by all.”
