Hawaii County fire officials say three people were hospitalized Thursday morning after a head-on collision in Laupahoehoe Fire crews responded to Highway 19 at the 25-mile marker at around 8:20 a.m. A sports utility vehicle was found overturned on an embankment. The male driver and the female passenger in the SUV were trapped in the vehicle when crews arrived. A sedan was found in the middle of the highway with a female driver trapped. Fire officials say there was extensive damage to both vehicles. The two females were transported to the Hilo Medical Center. The man was flown to Hilo Medical Center via helicopter.
