Urbana, OH : Driver crashes into Dollar General entrance on Tuesday, 20th October 2016
An Urbana woman was charged after crashing into a local store Tuesday morning.
Carrie Gavol, 33, of 420 Orange St., was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana paraphernalia after crashing into the front entrance of the Dollar General store, 650 E. Water St.
Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell said that at 9:11 a.m. personnel from the Urbana Police Division and Urbana Fire Division responded to the non-injury crash.
An investigation by police found Gavol had driven to the location and contended that her brakes were not working, resulting in the crash and causing disabling damage to the 2003 Ford Escape owned by her mother, Virginia, and heavy structural damage to the Dollar General building.
Lingrell said police determined Gavol was under the influence of some substance, claimed by her to be marijuana, and she was unable to pass field sobriety testing by officers at the scene.
Lingrell said evidence obtained from Gavol will be sent to a crime lab for additional testing. He said police recovered marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia from the vehicle.
Lingrell stated Gavol had an outstanding warrant from the Champaign County Municipal Court for failure to appear on a separate pending traffic case. Gavol was transported to the Tri-County Regional Jail.
On Wednesday, Gavol’s bond was established at $1,000 during an arraignment hearing, according to the municipal court’s website. Other conditions of bond include no driving privileges and no alcohol or drug offenses.
A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25.
Additionally, police charged Virginia Gavol, 65, with wrongful entrustment for allowing her daughter to drive the vehicle. Carrie Gavol does not have a valid driver’s license and is under many court suspensions of her driving privileges.
An arraignment hearing for Virginia Gavol is scheduled for Friday.
