Greenville, S.C : Anderson woman killed in a collision on Friday, March 10, 2017
Greenville, South Carolina
An Anderson woman was running errands when she was killed in a noontime collision Friday.
Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown said Estelle Wood, 79, suffered severe blunt force trauma after a Mack truck slammed into her 2005 Lincoln Continental at 12:04 p.m. in the intersection of S.C. 24 and Whitehall Road.
Wood was given CPR at the scene, then transported to AnMed Health Medical Center in downtown Anderson and declared dead there at 12:55 p.m., according to McCown.
Family members told McCown that Wood, who lived nearby on Green Pond Road, was headed to the grocery store and her doctor's office when the collision occurred.
South Carolina Highway Patrol spokesman Trooper Joe Hovis said Anthony H. Maye, 63, of Greenwood, drove through a red light before hitting Wood's Lincoln in the middle of the intersection.
Maye was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, Hovis said. Maye was cited for disregarding a traffic signal. The truck belongs to Powell's Trash Service of Greenwood.
The Highway Patrol, Centerville Fire Department, MedShore ambulances and other local agencies responded and LifeFlight helicopter was dispatched to the scene.
