Federal Way, WA : Two people injured, one critically in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 99 in Federal Way early Wednesday, Nov 25, 2015

A driver struck a patch of ice early Wednesday on Pacific Highway South (Highway 99) in Federal Way, crossed the centerline, clipped a semitruck and struck a pickup, closing traffic in both directions.

The driver, a 54-year-old man, was transferred to Harborview in critical condition, said Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock. The pickup driver, a woman in her 30s, was sent to Valley Medical Center in Renton with injuries.

The roadway reopened about 1 p.m., according to a tweet from the Federal Way Police Department. It was closed in both directions from Porter Way to about 360th Street South for several hours.

“A major accident investigation team is on scene … it’s a debris field that goes all the way across (the width of the highway),” she said.

Thanksgiving is generally the holiday that sees the most fatal crashes and motor-vehicle deaths, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

The increased holiday fatalities have been tied to speed, weather and time of travel, the institute said.
