NORTH HAVEN, CT : 2 seriously hurt after morning crash in North Haven on Friday, December 2nd, 2016
Four people were taken to the hospital — two of them with serious injuries — after a crash early Friday that shut down part of Dixwell Avenue in North Haven.
The two seriously injured people had to be extricated from the wreckage after the accident, which happened shortly before 6 a.m. at the intersection of Dixwell Avenue and Hartford Turnpike.
The two were thrown from their seats during the crash, Fire Chief Paul Januszewski said in a press release.
The two seriously injured people were a man, 43, and a woman, 38, who were riding in a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe.The crash had Hartford Turnpike shut down between Devine Street and Homewood Avenue for about five hours Friday morning. The road reportedly reopened at about 11 a.m.
Preliminary investigation suggests the Hyundai was traveling westbound on Dixwell when it crashed into a 2005 Toyota Rav 4. The impact sent those SUVs into a 2005 Chevrolet Uplander and a 1999 Honda Civic that were stopped at the intersection.
Investigators were still working to determine who had been driving the Hyundai. The names of the man and woman were not immediately released.
The woman driving the Toyota, 40, was also taken to the hospital, as was the man, 30, who was driving the Honda. The driver of the Chevrolet declined medical treatment at the scene.
“This was a very serious crash involving multiple vehicles and multiple patients,” Januszewski said. “I want to commend our firefighters for their diligent work in assessing the patients and rescuing multiple trapped occupants.”
Police are continuing to investigate the crash. Anyone with information can reach police at 203-239-5321.
