Jersey City, NJ : SUV flips in crash, nearly slams into gas tanker near Holland Tunnel early Monday, May 9, 2016
Catastrophe was averted early this morning when an SUV flipped and crashed in a Downtown gas station just a few feet from a tanker delivering gas to the station.
Three of the eight people in the SUV were injured in the 12:30 a.m. crash, but it could have been exponentially worse had the SUV slammed into the tanker at the BP station at 14th and Erie streets.
A man who was ejected from the SUV suffered a head injury, a 5-year-old girl sustained abdominal and head injuries, and a 54-year-old woman sustained head and neck injuries, Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo said.
They were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health, where they were listed in stable condition by 2 a.m.
Police are investigating if the SUV was cut off by another driver before the crash. The SUV driver, a 32-year-old man from Palm Beach, Florida, was issued two summonses, one for failure to have a child restraint and one for reckless driving, Pentangelo said.
