West Union, OH : Couple killed in a crash on Ohio 247 near West Union on Sunday afternoon, December 27, 2015
A crash Sunday afternoon left two Adams County teens dead.
According to Ohio State Highway Patrol Georgetown Post, the accident happened at 5:08 p.m., at the intersection of Ohio 247 and Jane Street, in West Union.
A 1999 Cadillac Deville, operated by Ivan Ward, 73, of West Union, was traveling northbound on Ohio 247, when it was involved in a crash with a 2001 Ford Mustang, operated by Dillon Grooms, 18, also of West Union.
The Mustang was traveling southbound on Ohio 247, police said.
According to OSHP, the crash occurred when Grooms’ vehicle was attempting a left turn onto Jane Street and failed to yield to Ward’s vehicle.
Dillon Grooms, and Haley Grooms (not related), 18, of Blue Creek, Ohio, his front seat passenger, were both pronounced deceased at the scene by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
According to family members, the Grooms couple were headed to a holiday gathering when the accident happened and had plans to marry soon.
Neither person in the Mustang was wearing a seat belt, police said.
Ward was transported by a West Union Life Squad to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, in Cincinnati, for non-life threatening injuries sustained during the crash.
Ward was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a factor at this time, police said.
West Union Police Department, Adams County Sheriff’s Office, and the West Union Fire/Emergency Medical Services assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the OSHP.
