Columbia, SC : Pedestrian hit, killed by truck in downtown Columbia on Thursday morning, March 24, 2016

The Columbia Police Department says a man died after he was hit by a cement truck in downtown Columbia on Thursday morning.

CPD officials say the incident happened around 8 a.m. at the corner of Main and Elmwood streets when the truck collided with the victim as the victim was attempting to cross the intersection.

Investigators who have not released the identity of the man say he died from injuries.

For roughly three hours, investigators stayed on scene taking measurements of the truck and questioning people who were walking by.

Darnella Johnson, who says she frequently walks in the area, said it's a dangerous intersection for both drivers and pedestrians.

"Whoever is controlling the light changes need to reconsider," Johnson said. "You know, if you going to have them arrows pointing this way for them to turn with two lanes fine but the pedestrians shouldn't have the right of way then. It should be when the pedestrians do have the right of way but make sure there's not no oncoming traffic that's turning. It's dangerous over here."

No word on any charges against the driver. CPD says they're continuing to investigate.
