APPLE VALLEY, CA : Two people were killed in a crash on Tuesday, September 19th 2017

Two people were killed in a crash here Tuesday evening, authorities said.

Apple Valley Fire Protection District and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials responded to the crash, which involved a sedan and pickup truck and occurred near the intersection of Sitting Bull and Tamiani roads at 5:42 p.m. Tuesday.

According to authorities, a silver 2006 Saturn Ion, which was being driven by Jaqueline Contreras, 34, of Apple Valley, was traveling north on Tamiani Road and failed to stop at the stop sign near the intersection with Sitting Bull Road.

Authorities said the Saturn Ion was struck by a white 2012 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Richard Gonzales, 21, of Apple Valley, that was traveling west on Sitting Bull Road.

“The force of the collision caused both vehicles to leave the roadway,” sheriff’s officials said in a statement. “The Contreras’ vehicle rolled over one-and-a-half times and came to rest on its roof. Both vehicles sustained major damages.”

Emergency personnel found Contreras and a 16-year-old boy, identified as Ruben Contreras, 16, of Apple Valley, trapped in the Saturn Ion. Extrication was required to free both Jaqueline and Ruben Contreras, according to authorities.

Ruben Contreras was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sheriff-Coroner officials, and Jaqueline Contreras was transported to St. Joseph Health, St. Mary, where she later died.
