RIDLEY TOWNSHIP, DE : 2 teens killed in 1-car crash on MacDade Blvd. in Ridley on Monday, 31st December 2018
Police have identified two victims killed in a single-vehicle crash early Monday morning as 19-year-old Alexander Gray and 18-year-old Christian Bauerle, both of Wilmington, Del.
Police Capt. Scott Willoughby said Monday afternoon that the crash is initially being attributed to the vehicle’s high rate of speed, but there was nothing at this point indicating alcohol as a contributing factor.
The teens both died after the Honda sedan they were traveling in crashed into a utility pole on the 1200 block of MacDade Boulevard around 1 a.m., according to police.
Willoughby said a medic traveling eastbound on MacDade saw the other car “fly past him” at a speed estimated around 60 or 70 miles per hour and then a shower of sparks when it connected with the pole a few blocks further on.
By the time the medic got to the scene, Willoughby said it was apparent both teens had been killed instantly in the crash, which tore the car in half and snapped the pole.
Detective Thomas Holmes processed the scene and nothing like alcohol stood out, according to Willoughby. There were no bottles in the car and the phones of both victims were locked, Willoughby said. A toxicology report from the Medical Examiner's office is pending.
