GARDNER, MA : One person was killed in a single-car crash on East Broadway on Sunday, August 6, 2017

One person was killed in a single-car crash on East Broadway (Route 2A) Sunday night.

Gardner Police Sgt. James Trifiro said the driver died when the vehicle hit a telephone pole in front of 335 East Broadway near Minott Road about 9:15 p.m. The victim, whose name was not released Monday, was the only person in the vehicle.

In a news release, police said the victim was trapped in the passenger’s compartment of a black 1998 Honda Civic.

?(The occupant) was eventually extricated and pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash,” Sgt. Triforo wrote. He did not list the driver’s name, and a dispatcher at the station said no further information would be released Monday.

A spokesman for Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. said the victim was from Fitchburg but declined to provide further information.

The accident is under investigation by state police.
